What is IM?
Instantaneous communication tool that allows you to type messages to one or more people using standard chat clients - AOL AIM, Yahoo!, or MSN Messenger
What's so Special About It?
- Students/patrons are already using IM - you are going where your users are
- IM is user centered and builds relationships with library users
- It's free software and very easy for library to create an IM account
- Not as many features as QuestionPoint or 24/7, but also not as many problems
How Could I Use It in My Library?
- To communicate with patrons/students/faculty wherever they are
- To communicate internally with library staff
- To replace your more expensive chat programs (as Georgia Tech has done)
Neat Stuff
- Meebo and KoolIM: neither requires a download, which may be helpful in convincing your IT department that it's safe.
- Gaim (GSU) and Trillian (Georgia Tech) - IM aggregator software that works with most IM services
